Why You Don’t Need to "Know What You Want" Before Starting Your Rebrand

If you're an online service provider or coach whose business has grown over the last few years, but your brand still feels stuck in the past, you know how frustrating it can be. Maybe your website isn't converting, your messaging feels scattered, you're attracting clients who aren't the right fit, or you're struggling to explain what makes you different in a crowded market.

Helping business owners solve those exact problems is the heart of all of the work we do at Specht & Co.

But there's one concern I hear all the time from people who are hesitating when it comes to investing in branding:

"I know I need help, but I'm not sure what I actually need help with. What if branding isn't even the problem?"

If you've ever thought that, join the club.

It's one of the most common hesitations people have before reaching out, and it makes complete sense. Investing in your business is a big decision, and you want to make sure you're solving the right problem.

That's exactly what I want to help you figure out today.

In this post I’m going to clear up one of the biggest misconceptions about branding and explain why not knowing the exact solution isn't a sign that you're not ready yet… it's actually the very reason it's time to bring in outside expertise.

By the end of this post, you'll have a much better understanding of whether strategic branding support could help you move forward and how to decide if now is the right time to invest.

Let's get into it.

Why It’s Hard to Know What Your Brand Actually Needs

If you’ve spent any time thinking about your brand, you’ve probably heard that “strategy” is important.

But knowing that brand strategy matters and understanding what it actually looks like in practice are two very different things.

That’s partly because most of what we see from branding projects are the tangible deliverables. The logo, color palette, fonts, messaging, and website. We don’t see nearly as much of the strategic thinking, conversations, research, and decision-making that happen behind the scenes to determine what those things should actually look and sound like.

So it makes sense to assume that you’re supposed to come to a brand designer with a pretty clear idea of what you want or need.

You might think you need to know whether the problem is your website or your messaging. Whether you need a few updates or a complete rebrand. What pages your website should have. What you want your brand to look like. Maybe even what colors and fonts you want.

And when you don’t have those answers, it’s easy to think, “Maybe I’m not ready to hire someone yet.”

Past experiences with designers can reinforce that idea, too. If you’ve worked with someone who asked you to tell them what pages you wanted, what colors you liked, what fonts you preferred, or what you wanted your messaging to say, you may have walked away believing that it’s the client’s job to figure out the direction, and the designer’s job to execute it.

But that’s not how a truly strategic branding process should work.

You should bring your expertise about your business, your clients, your goals, and what isn’t working. But you don’t need to know exactly what the solution is. Let's be honest… if you did, wouldn’t you be doing it already?

Identifying what’s actually broken, uncovering what makes your business different, and determining what needs to change is part of the strategist’s job.

In other words, you don’t need to show up with a fully formed vision. You need a strategic partner who knows how to help you find it.

You Don't Need to Know the Solution… You Just Need to Know the Symptoms

As we’ve discussed, one of the biggest misconceptions about hiring a brand strategist is believing that you need to walk in with a complete plan.

But think about it this way… when you go to the chiropractor, you don't walk in and say:

"I think my L4-L5 disc is bulging, and I'd like you to adjust it using this specific technique."

You say "My back hurts when I sit for too long." or  "I've been having pain in my lower back and hips."

The chiropractor asks questions, gives you an assessment, and maybe takes x-rays. Then they identify the root cause and recommend a treatment plan.

Branding works exactly the same way.

You don't need to know whether your biggest problem is your messaging, your positioning, your website, your visual identity, or your customer experience.

You simply need to recognize the symptoms.

Maybe you're thinking:

  • "I'm attracting the wrong clients"

  • "People don't seem to understand what I do"

  • "My website isn't converting"

  • "My business has evolved, but my brand hasn't caught up"

  • "Marketing feels harder than it should"

  • "I feel like I've hit a ceiling"

Those are all extremely valuable pieces of information that only you can provide.

I never expect my clients to diagnose the problem themselves. It’s my job to ask the right questions, connect the dots, and figure out what's actually causing the disconnect.

The fact that you can't immediately identify the solution doesn't mean you're not ready for help… It usually means it's time for someone else to step in and help you see what you've been too close to recognize.

You Don’t Have to Be the Creative Director of Your Own Rebrand

And just like you don't need to diagnose what's wrong with your brand, you don't need to know exactly what the solution should look like, either.

Imagine sitting down in your hair stylist's chair and saying: "I'd like you to use a level-seven toner, process it for twenty-three minutes, and cut my hair with these specific scissors at this exact angle."

Most people would never do that.

Instead, you might say, "I want to go lighter, but I don't want anything too high-maintenance." Or, "I'd love to go shorter, but I still need to be able to pull it back."

You're giving your stylist the outcome you want and the context they need to make good decisions… not prescribing exactly how they should get you there.

The same is true when you're working with a brand strategist and designer.

You don't need to know which fonts will communicate your personality, which colors will resonate with your audience, how your website should be structured, or what design style will position your business at the level you're trying to reach.

Instead, you should understand things like:

  • How do you want people to perceive your business?

  • How do you want someone to feel when they interact with your brand?

  • What do you want potential clients to understand about you right away?

  • Who do you want to attract more of?

  • What do you not want your brand to communicate?

  • Where do you want your business to go next?

Those answers give me something much more useful than a list of fonts you like or screenshots of websites you want to copy. They give me the criteria I need to make strategic creative decisions for your specific business.

For example, you might not know that your brand needs a warmer color palette, more editorial typography, or a completely different website structure.

But you might know that you want your business to feel more established and high-end without becoming stuffy or unapproachable. You might know that you want potential clients to immediately see you as an expert while still feeling like you're someone they'd genuinely enjoy working with.

That's the kind of direction I need from you… Then it's my job to figure out how we translate those goals into your positioning, messaging, visual identity, and website.

You bring the vision for where you want your business to go. I bring the branding and design expertise to figure out how your brand can help get you there.

Come With an Open Mind, Not All the Answers

You might be surprised to know that the people who get the most value from strategy are often the people who begin the process by saying:

→ "I know something is off, but I can't explain what."
→ "I think I've outgrown my brand."
→ "Marketing feels harder than it should."
→ "I'm embarrassed to send people to my website."
→ "I know I need help, but I don't know what kind."

Those are usually signs that you're exactly where you need to be… not that you're unprepared.

In fact, coming into the process without a predetermined solution can be a good thing. It gives us room to dig into what's actually happening in your business, challenge assumptions, and uncover solutions you may not have considered on your own.

Because if you come in convinced that you just need a prettier website, for example, we might miss the fact that the real issue is that your positioning isn't clear. Or you might think you need a complete rebrand when, after looking at the bigger picture, we discover that your visual identity is still working just fine—and it's your messaging and website strategy that need attention.

That's where being willing to trust the process matters.

You don't have to blindly agree with every recommendation or hand over control of your business. This is a collaborative process, and your perspective matters. But you do want to come in open to the possibility that the answer might be different from the one you expected.

After all, you don't hire a chiropractor because you already know what's misaligned.

You don't hire a hairstylist because you know the chemical formula your hair needs.

And you don't hire a brand strategist because you've already figured out whether your problem is positioning, messaging, or website design and how to fix it.

You hire them because you know something isn't working, and you're ready to trust their expertise to help you figure out why, determine what needs to change, and guide you toward the right solution.

How I Can Take You From “Something Feels Off” to a Clear Brand Direction

One of the reasons I built the Stand Out Brand® System the way I did is because I know most people don't come in with total clarity. And they're not supposed to!

It starts with the Stand Out Brand® Strategy Session

Every project begins with the Stand Out Brand® Strategy Session, a ninety-minute strategy intensive designed to uncover what's working, what's not, and exactly what needs to change.

This isn't a meeting where you're expected to show up with a color palette, wireframes, and a polished vision.

It's a space to unpack everything that's been feeling "off."

Together, we'll explore questions like:

  • What's no longer working in your business?

  • Where are potential clients getting confused?

  • What's changed since you first built your brand?

  • What's preventing your business from reaching the next level?

  • Are the real problems rooted in branding, messaging, positioning, website strategy—or something else entirely?

You leave with a completed brand strategy, a personalized roadmap, and clear next steps before making larger investments in branding or website design.

And if we continue into a larger branding or website project together, we’ll already have the clarity and direction we need to make every decision with intention.

The process is guided and question-driven

Even when you know your business inside and out, it can be surprisingly difficult to put everything in your head into words, especially when you’re trying to figure out which details actually matter for your brand.

That’s why my process is built around strategic conversations, questionnaires, and exercises designed to pull the right information out of you.

I’ll guide you through questions that help me understand things like:

  • Your goals

  • Your values

  • What makes your business different

  • The clients you want to reach

  • What’s working (and what isn’t)

  • Where you want your business to go next

You don’t need to know which pieces of information are relevant or how they should translate into your brand. And you definitely don’t need to tell me which fonts, colors, layouts, or website pages you need.

You bring the expertise you already have about your business, your clients, and your goals. I know what questions to ask and how to turn your answers into a strategic direction.

That guidance continues throughout the project, too. When it’s time to make decisions, I’ll walk you through my recommendations and the thinking behind them so you have context for what you’re evaluating.

That means you’re making decisions based on your goals, audience, and strategy instead of staring at a handful of options and trying to decide which one you happen to like best.

And ultimately, that makes the entire process feel a whole lot less overwhelming.

Strategy gives us a filter for every decision

And that brings me to one of the biggest benefits of doing the strategy work upfront. Once we’ve established that foundation, we have something to come back to throughout the entire project.

Every recommendation I make, whether we’re talking about your visual identity, website, SEO, or social content is informed by what we’ve already uncovered about your business, your audience, your positioning, and your goals.

So when I present a creative direction or design recommendation, I’m not simply showing you something I think looks good. I can explain why I made those choices and what they’re intended to communicate or accomplish.

And when it’s time for you to give feedback, you have that same strategic lens to work from.

Instead of getting stuck on questions like "Which one do I like better?"

We can ask:

→ "Which option better communicates the value of what I do?"
→ "Which direction is more likely to resonate with the clients I want to attract?"
→ "Does this reflect how I want my business to be perceived?"
→ "Does this support where I want my business to go next?"

That makes creative decisions a lot less overwhelming because it takes the pressure off you to simply have “good taste” or instinctively know what the right choice is.

You’ll still have opinions and preferences (and I absolutely want to hear them!). But we have a shared framework for evaluating those preferences alongside what your brand actually needs to do.

By the time your brand and website come together, you’ll understand the thinking behind what we’ve created and feel confident that each piece has a reason for being there.

What Happens When You Stop Waiting to Have It All Figured Out

There’s a point where trying to figure out exactly what you want before asking for help just keeps you stuck.

You know your current brand isn’t quite right. You know your website isn’t doing your business justice. You know you’ve grown beyond what you originally created. But because you can’t picture exactly what should replace it, you keep putting off doing anything about it.

Working with the right brand strategist gets you out of that loop.

You finally have someone who knows which questions to ask, what to listen for, and how to pull together the ideas that have been floating around in your head. Someone who can spot the patterns and possibilities that are difficult to see when you’re this close to your own business.

And often, what comes out of that process is more aligned than anything you could have come up with by sitting down and trying to decide what you “want” your brand to look like, because now your brand can be shaped by more than your personal preferences. It can reflect your expertise, personality, audience, goals, positioning, and the direction your business is actually heading.

You go from “I know this isn’t working, but I have no idea what I want instead” to having a clear direction and a brand that finally feels like the business you’ve been trying to build.

And once that foundation is in place, you can stop tinkering, second-guessing, and trying to piece it together yourself. You have a brand and website you’re excited to share, a clearer way to communicate your value, and a stronger foundation for attracting the kinds of clients you want to work with.

All because you stopped waiting to have the answers first... and found someone who knew how to help you uncover them.

You Don’t Have to Figure Out What Your Brand Needs on Your Own

If you’ve made it this far thinking, “Okay, I definitely know something needs to change... I’m just still not sure what,” that’s exactly where the Stand Out Brand® Strategy Session comes in.

This 90-minute intensive gives us dedicated time to dig into your business, your brand, what’s been feeling off, and where you want to go next.

I’ll ask the questions, look for the gaps and opportunities, and help you get to the root of what’s actually holding your brand back.

Together, we’ll:

✔️ Identify what’s working, what isn’t, and where the disconnect may be happening

✔️ Get clear on your positioning, audience, goals, and what your brand needs to communicate

✔️ Determine where your branding, messaging, or website may need to evolve

✔️ Create a personalized roadmap so you know what to focus on next

You’ll leave with a completed brand strategy and a much clearer understanding of what your business actually needs... whether that means a larger rebrand and website project or simply having a more strategic direction for your next steps.

And if you decide you’d like my help bringing that strategy to life, your full investment in the Strategy Session will be credited toward a done-for-you brand and/or website project when you book within 30 days.

So if “I don’t know exactly what I want yet” has been the thing keeping you from reaching out, you can officially take that off your list of reasons to wait.

You don’t need to bring me the answers. That’s what we’ll figure out together.
